PÄRNS COMPLETED A NEW ANIMATED FILM “LUNA ROSSA”
New Animated Film by Olga and Priit Pärn “Luna Rossa” Premieres at Imaginaria International Animation Festival
Olga and Priit Pärn, renowned Estonian animators, have recently completed their latest film, “Luna Rossa,” produced in collaboration between Eesti Joonisfilm and the French company Miyu Productions. The film is set to premiere on August 21st at the Imaginaria International Animation Festival in Conversano, Italy.
After many years, the Pärns are once again delighting film enthusiasts with a new work. The production of this 32-minute film was an extensive process, taking nearly four years to complete. A significant portion of this time was dedicated to the film’s rich visual design. The filmmakers employed an innovative technique inspired by the content of the story, using a Motion Capture system that records actors’ movements as 3D puppets in a computer, while the final product remains a 2D animated film. The actors include Karolin Jürise, Tanel Saar, and Ago Soots from VAT Theatre.
The story is set in Italy, likely in Naples. The relationships between the main characters—two men and two women—are complex and intentionally presented in a way that allows for various interpretations by the audience. However, the story moves steadily towards a specific goal, which the creators have chosen not to reveal, leaving future viewers with the joy of discovery.
It is not yet clear when “Luna Rossa” will be available to Estonian audiences. However, the world premiere will take place on August 21st at the Imaginaria Animation Festival in Southern Italy. The Pärns are very pleased with the choice of venue: “For us, a film is only complete when we see and hear the reaction of a full audience. What could be better than having our pseudo-Italian film first viewed by a real Italian audience?”
The Imaginaria International Animation Festival runs from August 18th to 25th in Conversano, Southern Italy.
“Luna Rossa” was produced at Eesti Joonisfilm, with co-production by French company Miyu Productions. The film’s producer is Kalev Tamm, and co-producers are Emmanuel-Alain Raynal and Pierre Baussaron. Financial support for the film’s production was provided by the Estonian Film Institute, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Giga, and on the French side, by the Centre national du Cinéma et de l’Image animée (CNC) and Pictanova.
